Short-Form Repurposing Checklist
A repeatable checklist for turning podcasts, interviews, webinars and long-form videos into purposeful short-form content.
Repurposing should preserve the meaning of the source while adapting the opening, context and format for a new viewing environment. The goal is not to cut the longest recording into arbitrary equal pieces; it is to identify complete, useful moments that can stand on their own.
Source preparation
- Confirm that you have permission to reuse every speaker, visual and music asset.
- Create or review a transcript and correct names, brands and technical terms.
- Record the original title, URL, publication date and campaign objective.
- Mark confidential, outdated or context-sensitive statements before selecting clips.
Select useful moments
- The clip communicates one focused idea, lesson, story or answer.
- The strongest line can become an honest opening without changing the speaker’s meaning.
- Enough context remains for a new viewer to understand who, what and why.
- The ending resolves the idea or gives a relevant next step.
- The segment is not dependent on an unseen chart, earlier joke or missing question.
Adapt the edit
- Reframe intentionally for 9:16 rather than relying on a fixed center crop.
- Use speaker changes, B-roll and graphics to clarify—not manufacture—meaning.
- Write captions for readability and check line breaks, emphasis and safe areas.
- Remove delays while preserving natural speech and emotional timing.
- Add a source or qualification when a claim needs context.
- Keep brand elements consistent across the whole content series.
Platform delivery matrix
| Item | Confirm before export | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas | 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9 as required | Prevents automatic crops from hiding key information |
| Captions | Burned-in and/or SRT as requested | Supports silent viewing and accessibility |
| Opening text | Accurate and readable in the first frame | Sets context without misleading clickbait |
| Audio | Dialogue level and music checked on a phone | Most short-form is consumed on small devices |
| File naming | Series, topic, version and ratio | Prevents publishing the wrong variation |
| Source record | Original URL and timecode saved | Makes verification and future updates easier |
Publishing and measurement
- Write platform-specific copy instead of using one truncated caption everywhere.
- Credit the original speaker, show or collaborator where appropriate.
- Link to the full source when the platform and campaign allow it.
- Track topic, hook, length and audience response in a simple content log.
- Review comments for genuine questions that can improve future edits.
- Avoid attributing every view or conversion to editing without supporting evidence.
